Nintendo game - Battle Tank

Not many people are familiar with Battle Tank for the NES. Unlike the popular Battle City, Battle Tank is a game that takes on a more realistic and serious tone. Right from the beginning, the player is confronted with a foreboding, commando-like music that signals the coming of war and a cinematic featuring a hundred or so tanks in straight formation going off to battle. No other NES game can make your throat dry with anxiety and excitement than Battle Tank's intro.

Created by a company called Absolute Entertainment in 1990, Nintendo's Battle Tank is a first person shooter that places you inside a tank. Your orders come directly from NATO and mostly involve blowing up enemy tanks, copters, fuel depots, and power plants. The levels come in the form of "missions" where a short debriefing takes place and you're given your objectives.

As for the game itself, you drive the tank around until you reach your intended targets. The tank comes equipped with a dashboard that has a speedometer and fuel gauge. Your weapons include a 150 mm cannon, a wire, smoke for cover, and a .50 cal gun turret. All of these have ammunition which needs to be budgeted properly in order to win the mission. A map is also provided detailing the locations of all the objectives. There are other gauges inside the tank including a horizontal compass, an indicator telling you how many enemies are left and the amount of damage your tank can take, as well as a screen which warns you of impending mines or critical damage. Battle Tank doesn't fool around and likes to deliver the feel of being inside a real tank as far as 8-bit technology will allow.

The amount of indicators might overwhelm the player at first, but once the initial levels are cleared and the controls are familiarized, the game can be quite enjoyable and challenging. The enemies get more difficult to take down as the mission progresses, and multiple objectives force you to plan your moves accordingly. Although it really isn't that much of a brain buster, Battle Tank still requires some form of strategy compared to other shooters where vigorously tapping the fire button is all that's needed. After the mission is successfully accomplished, a post-mission screen is shown where a group of army soldiers and their commander gather in front of a tripod which details the number of enemies destroyed by the player and his total score for the level.

The game doesn't really have much of a following, probably because it isn't that well-known. However, its quality is excellent, and Battle Tank NES can provide you with quite a few heart-stopping moments. Playing Battle Tank Nintendo online and downloading Battle Tank roms is now possible, finally giving this game the wide audience it was denied so long ago.
