Nintendo game - Captain Tsubasa 2 (J)

Soccer fans have never heard of Japanese footballer Captain Tsubasa. He's a guy capable of leaping tens of feet in the air, blocking shots with superhuman agility, and kicking soccer balls at mach 5. Sadly, he won't be gracing the soccer fields anytime soon, so Cristiano Ronaldo and Ronaldinho Gaucho can breathe a sigh of relief. However, his opponents in the video game world better run for cover!

Based on the popular Japanese manga and anime, Captain Tsubasa Volume II: Super Striker is the sequel to the highly popular Captain Tsubasa game for the Famicom by Tecmo. Western audiences were likely more familiar with the heavily Americanized version of Captain Tsubasa titled Tecmo Cup Soccer Game for the NES. However, unlike the first game, Captain Tsubasa Volume II: Super Striker never had an American counterpart and was only released exclusively for Japanese audiences and Famicom owners. Like Samurai Pizza Cats, the region-restricted release was a disappointment to gamers all over the world, because Captain Tsubasa Volume II: Super Striker was extremely well-designed and had features that weren't available in any other video game at the time.

Captain Tsubasa Volume II: Super Striker builds upon the highly successful formula of its predecessor and amps up the innovation. It chronicles the story of Captain Tsubasa and his soccer team as they block, kick, and score their way to the top of the soccer division. The plot is extremely well-developed, and even non-Japanese speakers can follow through with the general storyline due to the superb animation cutscenes. For the gameplay, the screen is divided into two horizontal segments. The one on the bottom shows an overview of the soccer pitch and lists all the available actions to choose from, while the one on top provides the animation scenes that correspond with the player's decision.

For example, if you choose to run with the ball, the animation on top shows the character running as well. If you decide to pass to another player, a set animation sequence plays it out and shows you if the pass was successful or not. If you decide to attempt a goal, an animation sequence is also shown. This happens for every action the player takes.

The animation sequences are extremely fun to watch, because not only do the characters perform physics-defying feats, it also feels as if you're dictating an actual soccer match in an anime. Captain Tsubasa and his team kick balls that rip through nets, plow through opponents with the force of a derailed train, and generally use their bodies in impossible ways. Although most of the animation scenes are constantly being reused, the developers always pull a fast one and show something unique whenever you advance to more difficult opponents.

Captain Tsubasa Volume II: Super Striker is a hidden treasure that has been kept locked in the Famicom world for far too long. Although a Captain Tsubasa NES port was never released, players may want to experience the magic of the original Captain Tsubasa and Captain Tsubasa 2 for themselves to see how these games have had far-reaching influences. They are now available online, but still in Japanese format. I guess it's time to brush up on your Kanji.
