Castlevania for the 8 bit Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

Confronted with the box-art for Castlevania - a whip-toting muscular hero facing a decrepit, ancient castle with Dracula's pale and demonic face smiling in the distance - most kids would have certainly felt a chill run down their spine, and almost all of them went down on their knees and begged their parents to buy them the game. They were not disappointed, as Castlevania by Konami has been considered one of the greatest games of all time. It's not surprising, considering the myriad features and positive aspects the game has to offer. The soundtrack is ominous, the atmosphere is creepy, and the monsters are rendered as scary as 8-bit graphics will allow. Although the game is extremely dated, kids have probably played this at night back in the day and ended up sleeping next to mom.

Castlevania follows the story of Simon Belmont, a descendant of the vampire-hunting Belmont clan, off to slay Dracula in his castle after the fanged-horror's return from the beyond. He is aided by his whip, the Vampire Killer, and a few other items picked up in the game. Castlevania is a typical side-scroller where the player moves east and kills all the ghouls and ghosts along the way. The whip serves as an excellent weapon, but more powerful side weapons are available. This includes a dagger, throwing axe, holy water, boomerang, and stopwatch. Simon can only carry one side weapon at a time, and they need ammunition to work which come in the form of hearts. Other special items include upgrades for Simon's whip, money bags to increase score, a cross that eliminates all enemies onscreen, an invisibility potion, a pot roast that restores health, a shot booster which increases the number of side weapons onscreen at a time, and several bonuses that further increase points.

The level bosses include classic monsters such as a large vampire bat, the Gorgon Medusa, a mummy, Frankenstein's monster and his peon Igor, the Grim Reaper, and finally Dracula himself. Each boss has a unique attack pattern that needs to be carefully discerned and weaknesses that need to be found out in order to defeat it in the most effective manner possible. Standard horror creatures such as skeletons, ghosts, and walking suits of armor also appear as common enemies.

Castlevania is a deceptively simple game that has captured players' hearts with its dark atmosphere and gameplay. It has spawned numerous sequels and is widely regarded as Konami's flagship series. Although other consoles now have more advanced versions of Castlevania, Castlevania 1 still remains the game that started it all. By playing Castlevania online or using Castlevania roms, fans can once again revisit this chilling piece of art that has cemented itself in gaming's hall of fame.
