Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers 2 follows closely on the heels of the original Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers and improves upon its predecessor. The developer Capcom retained the controls and gameplay which made the original quite endearing and tweaked the few areas that the first game suffered from. The result is a beautiful action-platformer that proudly shows the spirit of the highly acclaimed cartoon show.

The story begins with the villain from the previous game, Fat Cat, being busted out of the penitentiary by a flying blimp. The scene then cuts to the following morning with Chip listening to a news broadcast reporting about a local downtown restaurant that has apparently received a bomb threat. The Rescue Rangers and their pals Monterey Jack, Gadget Hackwrench, and Zipper quickly formulate a plan and dash to the location.

The player can decide whether to choose Chip or Dale when starting a game. Better yet, two-player cooperative mode allows you to pair off with a buddy for twice the action and enjoyment. The gameplay still retains the basic mechanics from its prequel: Chip or Dale runs towards the right side of the screen while jumping over obstacles or on top of moving platforms. Enemies usually try to impede their progress by getting up close and attacking or else dropping projectiles from a distance. They can be dispatched by picking up an object, usually a small wooden crate, and flinging it towards them. The chipmunks can also hide underneath objects to temporarily evade an attack. Simple puzzles and interactions are scattered throughout the game, adding variety and flavor. Once the levels are cleared, enemies from the television show appear as bosses and have to be defeated using the same pick-and-throw attacks as before.

Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers 2 improved the cooperative mode by adding mini games that must be completed by both players working together. The partner can now also be used as a throwing object if no other weapons are available.

The Chip 'n Dale 2 game is a prime example of taking what works and sticking with it. It makes a strong case that players don't easily tire of the same formula, and innovations aren't really necessary if they remove much of what made the game great in the first place. Although Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers 2 was positively received, it suffered from poor sales due to the impending release of the Super Nintendo, and most distributers cancelled shipments to stock up on the newer 16-bit games. However, the availability of Chip 'n Dale 2 online gives a second chance to gamers who may have missed it. Even if it didn't sell as well as it should have, it has a permanent residence in the minds of players as one of the few good gaming sequels out there.
