game "Double Dragon 1" is loading.....
One of the pioneers of the beat 'em up genre, the Double Dragon game chronicles the adventures of Billy and Jimmy Lee, two streetwise brothers armed to the teeth with martial arts tactics. The story begins when Marian, Billy's girlfriend who also has eyes for Jimmy, gets accosted on the street by the brutal Black Warriors gang. A Black Warrior member socks Marian in the stomach and carries her off to their hideout. It's now up to the brothers to tear the thugs a new duodenum and rescue the fair damsel.
Double Dragon was originally an arcade game by Technos Japan that was later ported to the NES in 1988. The series was extremely popular and spawned a few more sequels. As one of the first beat 'em ups, Double Dragon proceeds in a side-scroller fashion where players need to get to the level exit on the other end of the map. Enemies frequently appear and need to be dispatched by employing a few martial arts moves that the brothers possess. This includes a standard punch and kick as well as a few combination techniques like the elbow, throw, uppercut, jumpkick, hair-pull kick, and headbutt. Players can also obtain weapons from the enemy by disarming the villain carrying it and picking up the weapon from the ground. These weapons come in the form of knives, whips, bats, and sticks of dynamite. Stationary objects like boxes, oil drums, and large rocks can also be thrown or kicked towards the enemy.
There are a total of four levels with a sub-boss in each. After the last level, the player fights Willy, the Black Warriors' leader, who packs a machine gun and a few martial arts moves. Once the epic battle is over, Marian is saved and kisses Billy as the end credits roll. However, if playing cooperative mode with a friend, Billy and Jimmy must first pummel each other senseless until one of them is left to receive Marian's love. This game certainly doesn't mess around.
Only the arcade version has the cooperative mode, which was the meat and potatoes of the game; the NES version is limited to single player due to console configurations. Unlike the arcade, it can also only show two enemies at a time, severely limiting the gameplay. Objects picked up will also disappear once the original enemy carrying it is defeated. The Double Dragon Nintendo version incorporates a level-up system in which more deadly moves such as the elbow and hair-pull kick can only be obtained after securing a number of points. The good thing is that a versus mode is added where players can fight each other. If the player finishes the storyline in the NES version, a computer-controlled Jimmy appears and acts as the final boss.
Double Dragon doubled the fun and doubled the public interest for beat 'em ups. Pretty soon, a whole slew of similar games inspired by this classic were developed by other companies. If you prefer your entertainment chock full of 8-bit violence, playing Double Dragon online will satiate your desires any day.
