game "Double Dragon 3" is loading.....
Double Dragon 1 and Double Dragon 2: The Revenge are synonymous with beat 'em up, pioneering many of the features used in later games of the genre. Ironically, Double Dragon 3: The Sacred Stones is antonymous with beat 'em up, pioneering many features that should never be used in any game ever again. Also known as Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone, this second sequel of the popular 1987 arcade game by Technos Japan was a complete flop. It overhauled the popular game mechanics of the first two Double Dragon entries and added its own innovations. Unfortunately, new things don't necessarily mean good things.
The story begins with brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee meeting a fortune teller named Hiruko who wants them to collect the three sacred stones and square off against a resurrected Cleopatra in Egypt. The NES version offers a slightly different story by having Marian (now named Marion for some reason) kidnapped and taken to Egypt. Most of the moves from the previous games have been changed and new ones incorporated such as a flying headbutt and the ability to knee a fallen opponent. The NES version stays more faithful to the previous entries of the series and retains some of the classic moves.
Double Dragon 3: The Sacred Stones follows the same beat 'em up pattern of the previous two entries; the player moves to the right and attacks enemies that appear. The game fails, however, because the difficulty level is tremendously harder compared to the other two; opponents now gang up and tear you apart the moment they see you. The player is also only given one life, so dying once means "Game Over". To compensate, Double Dragon 3: The Sacred Stones allows two extra team members to join you after beating them as bosses in the game. They serve as replacements in case Billy or Jimmy gets toasted. However, the extra players have different movesets and are quite difficult to control. The NES version has a cooperative mode to make things easier, but the sprites tend to blink and stutter when there are too many characters onscreen, making things harder to see.
The arcade version has also been heavily criticized for requiring players to buy power-ups; weapons, special moves, energy, and extra players in the arcade version have to be purchased in-game by depositing a token into the arcade machine. Oftentimes, the weapons are useless and do little damage, as are the extra characters, making the purchase a complete rip-off. The Double Dragon 3 NES version is also infamous for misspelling the word "Billy" as "Bimmy" in the opening message.
Double Dragon 3: The Sacred Stones has contributed to the beat 'em up genre by demonstrating how things should not be done. Insane difficulty, sloppy moves, and insufficient lives mar an otherwise awesome sequel. Gamers can now play Double Dragon 3 online or download Double Dragon 3, but the frustration this game offers hasn't changed much since its release.
For more fun, or just to waste time at work, you can play super mario bros 3 or the try donkey kong online. If the big ape or Mario aren't your thing we've always got classics like bomberman 1 or the popular castlevania rom.
