Donkey Kong Jr follows through the plot of the earlier Donkey Kong game where Mario successfully recaptured the giant enemy. In DK Jr released in 1982, which was a year later after the original DK version, the son of Donkey Kong known as Donkey Kong Jr is on his way to saving his incarcerated father. In this platform game, Mario becomes the antagonist who releases a number of zoo animals under his control to deflect the approaching DK Jr on his path towards the key and ultimately his father's cage. Mario and DK fans play Donkey Kong Jr online to relive the excitement. Anticipations regarding the reversal of roles were mostly favorable.

The main objective of the game is to reach the top of the level by maneuvering through obstacles. DK Jr starts at the bottom and climbs to the higher platforms by grabbing on to vines, chains, or ropes. The character can move right or left and can jump. The main enemy released by Mario is a group of Snapjaws. These are animated bear traps that seem to look like tailless alligators with powerful jaws. Bird-like creatures known as Nitpickers also appear in the later stages. Finally, there are Sparks that traverse across the wiring that DK Jr would grab in order to transfer from one platform to another. One contact with any of these enemies and DK Jr loses one life. To eliminate these enemies, the user must reach out for a fruit and let it fall on the enemy.
