The Final Fantasy NES game was developed and published by Square. It was released in 1987. This game is the first installment in the series. It is a fantasy role playing game that follows four adolescents known as the Light Warriors. Each one of the four carries one elemental orb from their world. These elemental orbs have been darkened. Enemies known as the four Elemental Fiends are responsible for darkening the orbs. The Light Warriors are on a mission to beat the evil forces. They must return the light to the elemental orbs and save their world.

The game setting is in a fantasy world made up of three continents. The four orbs govern the world's elemental powers. Each orb represents a certain element. They are wind, water, earth and fire. As the orbs began to darken, the world has fallen into disarray. Several races inhabit the game's world. These races include Mermaids, Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Dragons and Robots.

The game has four modes. The first is an overworld map. The second mode is a town and dungeon map. The third is a battle screen, and the fourth is a menu screen. The overworld map is used to direct characters to the locations they need to reach. It is a scaled down version of their world.

The Final Fantasy NES game was well received both critically and commercially. The game was praised for its advanced graphics and strong story line. This single player game has been called one of the most influential classic role playing games of all time.
