Space Invaders in 1978 paved the way for future video game shooters, starting with the well-received Galaxian in 1979 and its sequel Galaga in 1981. Galaga greatly improved upon the formula of its predecessor and introduced its own concepts. The game hit the arcade world by storm and was especially addicting due to its colorful enemies, innovative gameplay, and flashy sound effects. Its popularity transcends time, because many gamers still play Galaga even today.

The game opens with strange insectoid aliens, the Galaga, waging war with the player, a small interplanetary ship. The player can only move horizontally and must fire shots at the Galaga above him while simultaneously avoid return fire. Unlike Space Invaders, the aliens do not take a predetermined side-to-side movement or descend towards the bottom of the screen. Rather, the Galaga fly in from all sides, settle in formation, and scatter back out again. The aliens are hard to hit with this random pattern, and some will return fire or purposely collide their ship with the player's. When all the Galaga are destroyed, the level is completed and the next one begins.

Galaga employs a simple color scheme which is pleasing to look at. It also has various beeps and sounds, including a memorable theme music. The truly beautiful part of the game, however, was the ability to link two ships as a single unit. This happens during levels when one of the boss Galaga swoops down and fires a tractor beam in order to capture the player's ship. If the ship is within range, it is taken prisoner and joins the Galaga formation. The player's next ship then comes along and has to free the captured one by destroying the boss Galaga. If the rescue is successful, the two ships combine and act as one unit, improving firepower but also increasing vulnerability due to the wider size. This was a novel concept at the time and added a new mix of strategy to the game.

Although Space Invaders was the father of shooters, Galaga greatly contributed many of the concepts used in today's modern releases. It wasn't merely a knockoff of the Space Invaders formula but rather an awesome game on its own. After its port, the Nintendo Galaga version also attracted a large following. While the craze has significantly subsided, many modern gamers still play it during their downtime due to its beautiful simplicity and addicting nature. It's a testament to how far a carefully crafted game can withstand time. Playing Galaga online or downloading Galaga roms will let you experience this historical landmark once again.
