game "Ice Climber" is loading.....
Ice Climber is a vertical platformer developed by Nintendo for the NES in 1985. The game features two Eskimos, Popo and Nana, attempting to reach the summit of a mountain and retrieve vegetables that were stolen from them by a condor. Ice Climber is pretty well known among the NES crowd, more so because of it being sold together with the console in some countries. However, the game doesn't really stand out compared to its contemporaries and is pretty average overall.
Ice Climber can be played by one or two people, although two player mode is preferable because the cooperative play makes the game more enjoyable. In Ice Climber, the player must climb thirty-two mountains in all, with each mountain getting more difficult as the game progresses. In every mountain, the player starts at the bottom of eight closed vertical platforms and makes his way to the top. The Eskimos must make a small opening from below using their mallets and jump up on the next platform. This process is continued up until the player is on the eighth platform. Beyond that is a bonus area where the stolen vegetables must be collected within forty seconds in order to increase points. At the very summit, the condor can be seen flying around. If the player manages to jump up and grab hold of the condor's claws before the forty seconds are up, extra points are awarded. However, even if the player fails the bonus stage, he still gets to advance to the next level.
Various enemies are present to make the game more challenging. Seals or Snowmen usually saunter past the platforms and seal off any openings made by the Eskimos. Nitpickers also fly in a predetermined pattern in an attempt to collide with the player. Furthermore, if the player stays on one platform for too long, a bear wearing a Speedo and sunglasses appears and forcibly moves the screen one platform up by jumping up and down. If the player is still on the bottom platform when the screen moves, he loses a life.
The Ice Climber game has the makings of a successful platformer: colorful backgrounds, endearing enemies, memorable audio, and creative gameplay. However, one thing keeps it from becoming an awesome game: the incredibly horrendous jump function. The horizontal leap is virtually nonexistent even with a running start. It is especially necessary during the later levels and the bonus stages, and falling off a moving platform is often unavoidable. Luckily, the jump mechanics can be learned with some practice, but not all players have the patience.
Ice Climber NES was largely forgotten until Popo and Nana were made as playable characters in the Super Smash Bros. series. The game has also seen some recent revivals and rereleases. However, it still isn't quite as enjoyable as some of the more solid platformers out there. Modern players can revisit this classic by playing Ice Climber online or downloading Ice Climber roms, but not much has changed since then.
