Nintendo game - Mappy Land

Children who played Mappy Land wondered if it was similar to Tom and Jerry, the lovable cat-and-mouse duo cartoon that was popular at the time. Although Mappy Land does have some good qualities, it is mostly a repetitive platformer with less-than-average controls and contains quite a few bugs.

Mappy Land is Namco's 1986 sequel to the 1983 Mappy game, the latter being the more popular and well-known of the two. The game starts with Mappy, the mouse policeman, on vacation with his fiance' Mapico. However, the devious Guchi gang, a bunch of felonious felines, is there to spoil his downtime. The stages are presented in a way wherein Mappy has to collect 6 items, and oftentimes a side item, before he can proceed to the next level. All the while, a number of cats are chasing him constantly. As with the prequel, trampolines are laid out all across the floors. Jumping on them can take Mappy to higher platforms and also escape the cats, but care must be taken not to jump on the same trampoline too many times or it will break, sending Mappy plummeting to his doom. To aid him on his quest, a variety of items can be used as distractions to temporarily ward off the cats. They include a cat toy, gold coin, fish, and a silver vine jar. Other levels also include more offensive items that temporarily disable the cats, such as a cannonball.

The game seems decent at first, but problems soon arise. To begin with, Mappy cannot survive a one-story drop by himself but can easily endure a fall from any height if he uses the trampoline. This conflicting detail might leave beginner players confused as to what is safe to do and what is not. There are also areas in some levels that are dead ends and leave you trapped if you happen to wander into them, forcing you to restart the level. The jump function is also hard to maneuver, and Mappy can oftentimes go past the intended distance. This is especially troublesome during level 4, the jungle world, where there are water pits that cause the player to lose a life if he misses a jump. Walls and items can also blend with the background, making navigation difficult. Finally, the game loops back to the first level after you beat it. Even though there are scenes that involve Mapico congratulating Mappy for bringing the items in time, the lack of a solid end scene and credits do little to provide a sense of closure.

Mappy Land might be a fun game if you can get past its inadequacies. However, there are other platformers out there with a much more solid gameplay. The only reason to play Mappy Land is if players want a hint of nostalgia, as this game, but mostly its prequel Mappy, was a common constituent of every kid's video game library in the early console era. In fact, the original Mappy was included in a recent anniversary collection of Namco's lineup. Today, adults can still play Mappy Land online if they wish, if only as a reminder of the past.

So what's next? You can spin the dial and try to play megaman 6 online or the ever popular nintendo batman (the first game is the best). Or, if you are looking for one of the all time great NES titles you can play bomberman 2. Looking for something you may not have seen before? Well then how about Somari?
