Realizing the potential of NES games to deliver educational value to kids, Nintendo and Mindscape Group published the game entitled Mario is Missing!. It was originally released for MS-DOS but was adapted a year later to run in the NES and SNES platforms in 1993. Mario is Missing online brings back the good old characters from the famous Mario Brothers franchise in a different genre from the original.

The backstory of Mario is Missing online started when Bowser planned to flood the entire planet Earth by melting the ice caps in Antarctica. Made aware of this evil plot, Mario, Luigi and Yoshi went to Bowser's lair. Supposedly the main protagonist, Mario went ahead of Luigi and Yoshi only to be captured by Bowser and his Koopas. From this storyline, the task of saving Earth and his brother Mario is now on Luigi's. He must stop the Koopas and ultimately foil the evil plans of Bowser. The objective of the game is to defeat each Koopa and confiscate the looted artifacts and return these to their proper landmarks. Along the journey, players learn geography by guiding Luigi as he explores the city. Players also have to gather information through the locals and must learn how to read maps as well as solve educational puzzles.

Trivia questions posed by the landmarks help players learn about a certain city. The first of the seven rooms features New York City and Rome. The seventh and final room takes Luigi to as far as Nairobi and Beijing.
