Nintendo game - Megaman 4

MegaMan 4, also known as Rockman 4: A New Ambition!!, continued the strong MegaMan series in 1991, receiving critical acclaim among Nintendo games at the time of its release. However, a retrospective analysis of the franchise often reveals this entry to be the beginning of the decline of the MegaMan popularity after it reached its peak in the MegaMan 3 NES game. Mega Man 4 keeps the basic controls but adds some highly controversial innovations of its own. Despite being inferior to the first three, MegaMan 4 is still an excellent game in its own right.

The story begins with a new evil roboticist named Dr. Cossack wreaking havoc with his eight robot master creations - Toad Man, Bright Man, Pharaoh Man, Ring Man, Dust Man, Skull Man, Dive Man, and Drill Man - forcing Dr. Light to send Mega Man out to stop this madness. The gameplay follows on the standards of MegaMan 3, leaving the slide function, energy refills, Mega Man's pet partner Rush, and the enigmatic Proto Man intact with only minor changes. The levels also follow the colorful and thematic nature of the previous entries albeit with a more somber mood, and the soundtrack features catchy tunes for the different robot masters. The game is a basic action-platformer wherein the player jumps over obstacles and destroys enemies, ultimately culminating in a fight with the level's robot master. After a robot master is defeated, Mega Man gains his signature ability. The process is repeated until all eight robots are conquered, leading to a faceoff with Dr. Cossack.

The major change in the game is the addition of the Mega Buster. It functions as a charged weapon wherein the player holds down the attack button until Mega Man starts glowing. Releasing the button will result in a huge projectile that packs two to three times the damage of a normal shot. The Mega Buster will become a staple in the series and subsequent releases will retain this upgrade. However, it drew criticism for being too powerful, often leading to players abusing it and negating the need to use the robot masters' abilities due to the effectiveness of the Mega Buster. Also added were the characters "Flip Top" Eddie, a walking robot canister that often pops up at various points and gives Mega Man power-ups; Dr. Cossack, the new villain after Dr. Wily's apparent demise at the end of Mega Man 3; and Kalinka Cossack, Dr. Cossack's daughter. Two upgrades were also included in the game namely the Wire Adaptor and Balloon Adaptor. The two adaptors serve to help MegaMan access hard to reach places. However, these items are not awarded to the player but must be found in certain areas of the game.

The game's storyline included a fake-out wherein Dr. Cossack turned out to have been coerced by Dr. Wily after the latter kidnapped his daughter Kalinka. Dr. Wily is revealed to have survived the building collapse at the end of Mega Man 3 and serves as the final boss of Mega Man 4. In the end, he still escapes, opening the door for the sequel Mega Man 5.

Although MegaMan 4 NES was regarded as the first domino that started to topple the series' popularity, no one can refute the game's solidity and playability. It is still a strong entry despite its shortcomings, and acquiring the MegaMan 4 rom or playing MegaMan 4 online can prove that this game is still awesome even after so many years.
