game "Megaman 5" is loading.....
The law of diminishing returns state that increasing one production factor while maintaining all others will eventually lead to lower returns. In other words, more of the same thing will ultimately lessen its value. We can see a prime example in MegaMan 5, released in 1992 as the fourth sequel in the Mega Man franchise. Although still a solid and fun video game by itself, Mega Man 5 offered limited innovations from its predecessors, and the series was starting to take its toll on the fans. While more of the same isn't necessarily a bad thing, the hype from the first four games has significantly died down, and Mega Man 5 did little to revive it.
Also known as Rockman 5 Blues' Trap?!, MegaMan 5 begins with a new set of eight robot masters - Star Man, Crystal Man, Napalm Man, Stone Man, Gyro Man, Charge Man, Gravity Man, and Wave Man - causing destruction yet again to planet earth. To make matters worse, Dr. Light is kidnapped and the perpetrator is apparently Proto Man, Mega Man's robot brother. Mega Man must once again traverse eight levels and face the opposing robot master at the end of each. The game is a standard action-platformer of jumping over obstacles and shooting down foes. The robot masters are creatively designed and follow a challenging attack pattern. After a robot master is defeated, Mega Man gains his signature move, which is undoubtedly one of the series' most attractive formulas.
MegaMan 5 retains all the basic controls of the previous games. The major additions are the fine-tuning of the Mega Buster introduced in MegaMan 4 by changing its attack range and visual graphics, as well as the introduction of a new character called Beat. Beat is a robotic bird that acts as a special weapon and can only be acquired if the player manages to collect eight letters scattered all over the eight levels. The game also introduces the Mega Tank, which serves just like the Energy Tank in the previous games except this one also replenishes the energy meter of all the special abilities in addition to the health meter. Since it's an extremely powerful item, the game limits the player's ability to carry it to only one at a time. Minor adjustments to Rush and other special abilities such as the Super Arrow are also included.
With five games in, the series is starting to wear itself out. Although Mega Man 5 boasts more impressive graphics than its predecessors, the bosses and audio aren't up to par with that of earlier editions, especially the MegaMan 2 NES game, the pinnacle of the Nintendo MegaMan series. The difficulty level is also significantly lower compared to the others. However, MegaMan 5 does have a few surprises, most notably the ingenious gravity altered setup in Gravity Man's level which requires Mega Man to walk on the roof instead of the floor. The game also does another fake-out when the ending reveals that the Proto Man who kidnapped Dr. Light was an impostor named Dark Man, a robot under the control of none other than Dr. Wily. Once again, after the player defeats Dr. Wily, his base starts to collapse and the evil inventor escapes in his ship.
Hardcore fans of MegaMan will enjoy this entry, but those who didn't like the first four that much will find little reason to pick this one up.
