game "Megaman 6" is loading.....
Few games can boast five sequels on the same console, but MegaMan has done just that. As far as boasting is concerned, however, Mega Man 6 doesn't really have much to brag about. It still utilizes the same action-platforming controls and gameplay of the first five entries and is an excellent game by itself, but it adds little to the worn out franchise. MegaMan 6 by Capcom was released in 1993 and was the swan song to the original NES game series, although the tired feeling of deja vu was too apparent to allow the epic farewell that everyone was expecting. Still, it's no reason not to play this awesome, albeit repetitive game.
MegaMan 6, also known as Rockman 6: The Greatest Battle Ever!!, begins with the announcement of the first annual robot tournament where roboticists pit their creations against each other. Dr. Light refuses to enter the violent tournament but lets Mega Man go as a spectator. The event coordinator Mr. X shortly reveals his plan for world domination after reprogramming the top eight robots in the tournament - Flame Man, Blizzard Man, Plant Man, Tomahawk Man, Yamato Man, Knight Man, Centaur Man, and Wind Man - to serve his bidding. He also challenges Mega Man to stop him and mentions that Dr. Wily was just a pawn since the beginning; Mr. X was the real mastermind. The game then goes to the level select screen where players can choose which of the eight robot masters they wish to take on first. Each has his own level that needs to be cleared by jumping over obstacles and destroying enemies, ultimately culminating in a showdown with the stage's robot master. After beating the boss, Mega Man receives that villain's signature move. The process is repeated until all eight are defeated and Mega Man faces Mr. X for the final battle.
Not much has changed in MegaMan 6; it still follows the same controls as the previous game. The major additions were done to Mega Man's mutt Rush, who now serves as two special abilities by fusing with Mega Man. The first ability is the Jet Mega Man or Jet Adaptor which transforms Rush into a jetpack that allows Mega Man to fly for a short period of time. The second ability is the Power Mega Man or Power Adaptor which transforms Rush into a thick exoskeleton that allows Mega Man to punch through certain walls. These two special abilities can be utilized repeatedly and do not require any energy, although there is a recovery period between uses. There is also the Energy Balancer, a special item which equally distributes ammunition among the eight robot master powers. Additionally, Beat can be obtained by collecting only four letters instead of eight.
MegaMan 6 has beautiful graphics, and the soundtrack, bosses, and levels are well-made. However, they seem relatively uninspired compared to the first three entries of the series. The game has received criticism for rehashing boss abilities and insulting gamers' intelligence by using another fake-out storyline with the character Mr. X, who is obviously Dr. Wily in disguise. Sure enough, the end scene reveals that it really is Dr. Wily. This time, Mega Man ensures that Wily does not escape by locking him up in prison for good, finally ending his reign of terror in the 8-bit consoles.
