The Metal Storm NES game was developed and published by Irem in 1991. It is a single player game. This game is a side scrolling, platforming shooter. The player advances through the levels going from left to right. The player's character is a large Mecha M-308 Gunner that must jump on platforms and shoot enemies. The player must also avoid hazards throughout the levels. It is important for the player to watch for bullets from enemy fire while getting to the end of each stage. The game has seven levels that become increasingly difficult as you advance through them. At the end of every stage, the player will encounter a boss that must be defeated. The object of the game is to stop a computer menace.

One of the most notable features of this game is that it allows players to switch gravitational pull. During game play if the player aims up while jumping, the gravity in the level will be reversed. The player will then end up standing on the ceiling. By jumping while pressing down, gravity will go back to normal.
