Pac-man is a game that doesn't need an introduction. It has the highest brand awareness out of any other video game, is a mascot for video games in general, and has had numerous accolades and awards attributed to it. At the height of the Space Invaders popularity in 1980, Pac-man came into the market and was largely ignored by distributors. The game is a maze-chase where the player takes control of Pac-man, a yellow circle with a mouth continuously opening and closing, and guides him towards a simple maze scattered with yellow dots. The objective is to eat all the yellow dots by passing through them. In the meantime, Pac-man is chased by four ghosts cutely named Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde. The ghosts all have various "personalities" and go through different routes in their attempt to catch Pac-man, making the gameplay more random and unpredictable. To aid Pac-man, four power-ups are located at separate corners of the maze. If the power-up is used, the ghosts turn blue and run away. At this state, they can be eaten for a higher score. If the ghosts are eaten, they return to their starting point at the center and respawn.

The game progresses when Pac-man successfully eats all the dots but ends if the player gets captured by the ghosts and loses all his lives. At later levels, the ghosts become faster and pursue Pac-man relentlessly. There is no final level, and the game continues indefinitely, although a bug in the original configuration prevented players from going past level 255.

Pac-man was a success due to its family friendly content that appealed to all genders and ages. Unlike the shooters, women were more inclined to play the game because of its non-violent nature and gender-neutral characters. The two-player mode also lets two people compete against each other for the highest score by taking turns playing as Pac-man. People of an older age bracket also found the game addicting because it only required the directional pad to play, making it easy to comprehend compared to other games. All the positive traits combined steamrolled the competition and launched Pac-man to fame, making it the highest-grossing video game of all time with 94 percent of the population identifying with it.

Pac-man is a classic game that put arcade gaming on the limelight. Although it is relatively old, Pac-man can still reel in new players and render hours of enjoyment.
