game "Punch Out" is loading.....
Similar to Tecmo Super Bowl, Punch-Out is another fabulously well-made, sports related video game. However, as far as actual boxing techniques and realism is concerned, Punch-out falls short in that department, opting instead to go for arcade style gameplay and cartoony characters. This gamble pays-off in spades, as the game was extremely well-received by players and critics alike.
Punch-out was developed by Nintendo in 1987. It goes by its other names Mike Tyson's Punch-out which featured then heavyweight champion Mike Tyson as the final boss, and Punch-Out Featuring Mr. Dream which changed Tyson's character to Mr. Dream after his contract with the developers expired. Punch-out stars an up-and-coming diminutive boxer by the name of Little Mac. The player controls Little Mac all throughout the game against tremendously oversized opponents. This was a planned decision rather than pure whim; by making Little Mac shorter and the opponent much larger, the developers ensured that the player saw all the punches being thrown, thus preventing frustrations from blind shots. Little Mac's attacks are limited to right and left jabs, body blows, and a hellacious uppercut that needs a star power-up to pull off. The stars are collected mostly by interrupting the opponent's punch before he can throw it.
For defense, players can dodge left or right, duck, or block. Blocking takes away some hearts from the heart meter, a gauge that signifies fatigue level. Other things that take away hearts are getting hit with a punch or having your own punches blocked. When the heart meter reaches zero, Little Mac gets pink all over, arms hanging limp at the sides. This state renders him unable to attack. The player must then dodge all incoming punches successfully for a number of times in order to recover from the fatigue and refill the heart meter.
There are a total of three rounds with an accelerated three minutes each. The objective of each round is to slowly chip away at your opponent's stamina bar by throwing accurate punches while keeping your own stamina intact by dodging and blocking, also taking note of the fatigue and star meters while you're at it. You can either win by knockout, technical knockout, or decision. The player rises through the ranks by defeating boxers and falls if he loses fights. There are a wide variety of colorful opponents for Little Mac. In between rounds, a few humorous taunts are thrown from across the ring, and Little Mac's trainer also gives advice. The opponents themselves have varying degrees of attack and special punches, finally culminating in a super-fight between the player and Mike Tyson or Mr. Dream, depending on the version. Once Tyson or Mr. Dream is defeated, Little Mac is proclaimed the number one boxer in the world.
Punch-out is incredibly satisfying and ranks high in everyone's list. Its comedic atmosphere and solid controls make this a challenging yet fun video game.
