Nintendo game - Samurai Pizza Cats

Samurai Pizza Cats the cartoon had a lot of things going against it. It was originally a Japanese animation called Kyatto Ninden Teyandee, a mouthful to begin with, and introduced to Western audiences later on. While successfully marketing Japanese anime to Western kids at the time was a difficult feat in itself, the show was further hampered by translation issues to the point where the English writers had to make up their own script using the completed episode as a guide, deviating massively from the original Japanese storyline. Like the cartoon equivalent of Springtime for Hitler, it had all the makings of a terrible show, but oddly enough, the end result was a brilliant, quirky, and comedic piece of art that defied the laws of television. It may not have been as popular as its TMNT counterpart, but Samurai Pizza Cats had a sizable following nonetheless.

Following on its heels was a video game of the same name released by Tecmo in 1991. Sadly, it was a Japanese-only Famicom version which made it difficult to purchase, much less understand. The good news is that modern technology has made Samurai Pizza Cats available online, and Samurai Pizza Cats roms are also accessible. They are included with English subtitles, but the translation is far from perfect. Despite this, the game can still provide hours of enjoyment.

From what can be pieced together, you play as one of the Samurai Pizza Cats, a trio of pizza vendors composed of Yataro, Sukashi, or Pururun, who have secret identities as butt-kicking feline androids. Each character has a basic attack mode and three special power-ups. The first power-up is a basic thrown projectile, the second is a boomerang-type missile, and the third is a powerful explosion that can hit multiple enemies on the screen, although there are subtle variations between the three Pizza Cats. These power-ups utilize energy, which are gauged by the ninpo meter.

If the ninpo meter falls to zero, the power-ups cannot be used. During the game, the player has the option of switching to a member of the rescue team composed of four more feline friends who have special abilities such as rock breaking, digging, swimming, and flying. These friends come in handy during certain levels to enable the player to grab items or get to places that are otherwise inaccessible.

Samurai Pizza Cats uses a Megaman-esque style of play that features switching in and out of different characters who have varying abilities. The levels also include different bosses with their own look and attack pattern. Despite being similar to Megaman, Samurai Pizza Cats has a unique atmosphere that mirrors the comedic and lighthearted nature of the show; it takes the tried-and-tested Megaman style of play and adds an original storyline and specialty of its own.

Samurai Pizza Cats is a gem that was severely hampered due to limited, region-dependent releases and translation issues. However, players who missed out and still want to give this game a try can do so online. It is a testament that not every high-quality video game makes it to the bestseller list.
