Nintendo game - Snow Bros

Gamers are pretty familiar with Taito's Bubble Bobble arcade game featuring the two lovable Bubble Dragons Bub and Bob. They are less familiar, however, with the two tenacious snowmen Nick and Tom of Kingdom Whiteland and the evil demon King Scorch who plans to rule over the world. That's Toaplan's Snow Bros for the NES in 1990. The game adopts the mechanics of Bubble Bobble but has some unique aspects of its own.

Snow Bros is pretty upbeat and fun. The soundtrack isn't exactly memorable but fits the different levels and screens quite well. At the beginning, we get a pretty standard story of an evil monarch vying for world domination. The only people standing in his way are Princes Nick and Tom of Kingdom Whiteland. King Scorch therefore attempts to destroy the two by summoning the Winter Winds and turning them into walking snowmen. With the two princes reduced to a cold state, the King captures Whiteland and even kidnaps the Princesses Tina and Teri of neighboring Kingdom Snowland. It's up to the two snow heroes to break free of their entrapment, ice King Scorch's plans, and rescue the fair damsels.

The game can be played in one-player mode or two-player cooperative. The levels feature multiple platforms with enemies on them. Players must fling snow at an enemy until enough is packed on the villain's body, turning him into a giant snowball. Once this is accomplished, players can then roll the snowball off the platform until it crashes into the opposite wall below, eliminating the enemy. Any other moving enemy that the snowball bumps into while rolling downhill is also eliminated, making it possible to destroy multiple targets at a time by rolling a snowball at the very top platform and watching it collide with the foes below. The player never runs out of snow to throw, so there is no ammunition in the game. Once all enemies are defeated, the player advances to the next level. At every tenth level are bosses, but defeating those follows a similar pattern of throwing snow or changing other minor opponents into snowballs and rolling them towards the boss.

If the player fails to complete a level within a certain period, a Halloween pumpkin attached to a cape appears. The pumpkin then spawns invulnerable ghosts who start chasing the player. This forces the player to complete the level at the fastest time possible or risk getting caught by the ghosts. Fortunately, the levels aren't that hard to complete with proper timing and practice, and the game also provides ample continues and extra lives. At the end of every tenth level, a slot machine is presented to provide extra points and 1-ups. Various power-ups that increase throwing distance, amount of snow, and walking speed are also available. There are also items that increase points depending on how many chain reactions the player gets with a single enemy snowball, and a special item that grants temporary flight is present as well.

The Snow Bros game is pretty obscure; it's not really well-known among the NES crowd. Overall, it's a decent and enjoyable game, but there's nothing really new. Playing Snow Bros online or downloading Snow Bros roms is now available, so gamers who haven't played this before can get to enjoy it today.
