Nintendo game - Sonic Mario 2

Some games are incredibly good, some games are terribly bad, and some games are utterly bewildering. Somari belongs to the third category. Its origins are still clouded in mystery even today, and no one really knows the definite date or place where this game first appeared. For starters, it's an illegal amalgamation of Nintendo's mascot Mario and Sega's flagship game Sonic for the Famicom console, and its name is derived as a combination of the words Sonic Mario or Mario Sonic. While this was the boyhood dream of every video gamer at the time, Mario and Sonic never really appeared together in the game. Rather, it features Mario in Sonic's world with his speed abilities. Everything else is practically borrowed from Sega's game Sonic the Hedgehog.

Since this game takes all the key concepts from Sonic the Hedgehog, it's no surprise that the enemies are identical, the gameplay is similar, and the storyline is borrowed. Only a few changes were made, such as Mario's ability to do a spin-dash move that only appears in the sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The levels were redesigned but largely kept the original theme. The major differences were the much slower gameplay of Somari compared to the speed thrills in Sonic the Hedgehog, and the controls are choppier and less balanced than the original.

Somari is a standard platformer. The player takes control of Mario and collects rings. Enemies can be destroyed by jumping on top of them, and the boss Dr. Robotnik must be defeated after going through six levels or zones. The plot follows that of Sonic the Hedgehog where Dr. Robotnik desires to turn all furry creatures into their robotic counterparts by taking possession of the powerful Chaos Emeralds. Somari changes the ending to one where Dr. Robotnik escapes in his ship with the Chaos Emeralds after the final battle with Mario while the ominous words "I will be back" are written below him.

Somari was critically acclaimed and critically panned at the same time, contributing to the game's already mysterious nature. Proponents praised the game for finally putting Sega and Nintendo's greatest creations together. Despite the similarities, players who loved the game mentioned its unique characteristics that separated it from the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Opponents, however, cited the game as a cheap knockoff and noted the poor controls and jerky gameplay in general.

Whether there are good things inside this game or not, it certainly needs to be played first in order to find out. Somari is available online, and players can unlock this Pandora's Box for themselves if they choose to.
