Super Mario Bros 2 for the 8 bit Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
Super Mario Bros 2 is a single player platform game that was released in America in 1988. The game is known in Japan as Super Mario USA. This game, often abbreviated as SMB2, was unusual because it was not developed from the ground up. It was actually a redesigned concept of a Japanese game called Dream Factory: Heart Pounding Panic.
In this game, Mario has traveled to a dream world named Subcon. Mario must save this world from a large, evil frog known as Wart. SMB2 is a side scrolling game. When each stage begins, the player gets to choose between four characters. The characters are Toad, Mario, Princess Peach and Luigi. There are individual strengths that each character possesses. For example, Luigi is tall and can jump much higher than the other three characters. Toad is not great at jumping, but he has the ability to run faster and pick vegetables faster than anyone else. Peach is the slowest, but when she jumps she can go further than anyone else because she is able to hover. Mario's skills are very balanced; he can perform all tasks moderately well.
One difference from the original Mario game is that you do not destroy enemies by jumping on top of them. Instead, you must throw objects at the enemies. Another difference is that the characters have a health meter in this game, unlike in the original. There are seven worlds in Super Mario Bros 2. At the end of World 7, the player must take on the final boss, Wart, in order to free Subcon.
