Nintendo game - Super Mario Bros 3

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's summit-reaching ascent of Mount Everest, Albert Read's first transatlantic flight, and the discovery of the wheel all pale in comparison to the greatest NES game of all time, Super Mario Bros. 3 by Nintendo in 1988. It was so good, they had to make a bad movie called The Wizard starring then-child actor Fred Savage to herald its release in North America. Although the flick wasn't really Oscar-caliber material, it created enough hype that eventually resulted in Super Mario Bros. 3 being one of the best-selling video games of all time with over 18 million copies sold worldwide.

Super Mario Bros. 3 continued the platforming style of the original Super Mario Bros. However, the graphics, gameplay, and soundtrack are infinitesimally better. The key components of jumping on top of enemies, collecting power-ups to boost strength and size, and gathering coins are still present, but the second sequel now adds a non-linear pathway by having players select the route they wish to go on in order to reach the final level. There are unique boss battles as well as creatively designed theme worlds such as “Giant Land” where the terrain and enemies are significantly larger.

In addition to the usual power-ups found in earlier games, Super Mario Bros. 3 now has a collection of suits that Mario can obtain to give him special abilities such as the “Frog Suit” which allows Mario to swim more accurately in underwater levels. The game also has a wide variety of items not found in the older entries that significantly amp up the gameplay and enjoyment. Overall, Super Mario Bros. 3 simply does a superb job of mixing the old formula that made the first two Mario games a success with the new innovations that made Super Mario Bros. 3 a whole lot better. A two-player mode is also possible where players alternate as Mario and Luigi.

The storyline features Bowser, also known as King Koopa, the main antagonist in Super Mario Bros., and his pack of evil spawn called the Koopalings terrorizing the seven kingdoms of Mushroom World. The dastardly Koopalings have managed to infiltrate the different regions' castles and turned their respective monarchs into weird creatures by stealing their magic wands. Mario and Luigi are then called upon by Princess Peach to liberate the seven regions from King Koopa and his kids.

Everything about the game is simply wonderful. There are limited flaws, if any, in the design, storyline, gameplay, and soundtrack. The only objections were the difficulty level which was deemed too hard for beginners. Other than that, there's not much criticism to be had.

Super Mario Bros. 3 was the pinnacle of NES games. There were a lot of excellent games at the time – Metroid, Double Dragon, Mega Man, Contra, and Ninja Gaiden to name a few – but Super Mario Bros. 3 simply blew all competition out of the water in terms of popularity and sales. This game has seen many remakes and rereleases since then, most recently the Wii's Virtual Console version, but none can compare to the feeling of firing up the NES and playing Super Mario Bros. 3 back in its heyday. If you happen to have missed that time, the next best thing would be to fire up the Internet and play Super Mario Bros. 3 online or download Super Mario Bros. 3 roms. You're never too old to play this game, and it would be a shame not to have experienced this cultural icon in your lifetime.
