game "Tecmo Super Bowl" is loading.....
Let's face it: compared to today's consoles, the 8-bit era of the Nintendo Entertainment System had grubby graphics, stolid sounds, and limited capabilities that severely hampered the creative talents of game designers. However, there are developers like Tecmo who work with what they've got and come up with a far superior game than anyone at the time could have ever conceived of. One such game was Tecmo Super Bowl, the pinnacle of 8-bit sports games.
Tecmo Super Bowl is widely acknowledged as the first video game to obtain licensing rights to real-world sports teams and players. Unlike other games before it, Tecmo Super Bowl featured the complete '90-'91 NFL teams and their rosters, as well as individual player statistics. It had also vastly improved upon its predecessor, Tecmo Bowl, by adding an expanded playbook of 4 runs and 4 passes, numerous animated half-time shows, fumbles, injuries, and substitutions.
This title is an arcade game that follows American football standards wherein two teams of 11 players attempt to take the ball into the opponent's end zone. In Tecmo Super Bowl, only a section of the field is visible at a time. The camera then pans accordingly to whichever area the ball is currently at. There are three general options of play: "Man" means players control the field action themselves as well as call the team plays, "Com" means the computer plays the team, and "Coa" means the player acts as the coach and calls the plays, but the computer carries it out on the field. Any combination of these three is possible such as man vs. man, coa vs. com, com vs. com, and so on for a total of 6 gameplay options.
TSB uses three game modes. The preseason mode features a standard game between any two teams of your choosing. The season mode contains the authentic NFL 1991 schedule and lets you assign the "man", "com", and "coa" options to any number of teams you want. The matches you aren't interested in will be simulated automatically. As the season advances, the computer stores your progress via the game's battery pack. Finally, the Pro Bowl mode lets you pit the AFC and NFC all-stars against each other. Tecmo Super Bowl allows the player to toggle the rosters to their liking at anytime, making the teams highly customizable. Detailed player charts are presented to let you plan accordingly and get a birds-eye view of things.
Tecmo Super Bowl has achieved a massive following over the years. Despite being released just prior to the advent of the more advanced Super NES era, the Tecmo Super Bowl NES remained strong all throughout the early nineties. It has received cult status and heavily influenced all future sports games. To date, players around the world are still releasing modifications for the game that upgrades the rosters to the current year, and tournaments are still being held. With the game's popularity, new players won't have to look far to be able to play Tecmo Super Bowl online. Who knows, the Super Tecmo Bowl fanclub may welcome in a new member soon.
