Nintendo game - Tecmo Bowl

Making an excellent sports game using the limited technology of 8-bit consoles is almost an insurmountable task. Apparently, no one told Tecmo this, because they utterly amazed the gaming world with the release of Tecmo Bowl for the NES in 1989. Tecmo Bowl was the best game that simulated American football at the time. It was also known for being the first popular video game that featured real life NFL players since Tecmo managed to acquire the rights from the NFL Players Association. All in all, it was an awesome release that packed quite a punch for football and non-football enthusiasts alike.

Originally an arcade game, Tecmo Bowl NES follows the standard NFL rules involving two teams attempting to outscore their opponent by successfully taking a football into the opposing team's end zone. The game uses the standard football field but does not show the entire area on one screen. Rather, the camera pans to wherever the ball is currently located. Tecmo Bowl also bends the rules a little by only having nine players per team instead of eleven.

There are three modes in the game. The Single Player mode lets you choose one football team to battle against the remaining eleven, computer-controlled teams one at a time. Since Tecmo did not have the rights to use the NFL teams, there are no official team names in the game and only the city names are shown. They also only chose twelve of the most popular cities at the time. However, each of the twelve cities has the corresponding 1988 NFL roster and player statistics. The Two Player mode lets you play against a friend, and Coach mode lets you dictate the plays you want for your team while letting the computer handle the actual field run. Tecmo Bowl utilizes a playbook system which comprises four unique plays for each team, usually two runs and two passes. The game also features pretty responsive controls for moving the players on the field as well as passing the ball.

The biggest draw for Tecmo Bowl was their simple and realistic rendering of American football combined with actual NFL players. With the huge success of the game, Tecmo followed it up with Tecmo Super Bowl two years later which was even better than the original. Sadly, Tecmo was never able to gain a secure foothold in the sports market, and other companies later gained the upper hand by developing better sports games in other consoles. However, Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl still have a massive cult following today. Playing Tecmo Bowl online will let you experience this historic sports game for yourself, truly a landmark in the NES era.
