Nintendo game - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1

Someone who has never heard of George Orwell's Animal Farm might be tempted to think of it as a manual for livestock raising and horticulture instead of a brilliant, anti-communist novel. Similarly, a kid who unwrapped a Christmas present containing a NES cartridge of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Konami in 1989 might have been tempted to think of it as a superb, beat 'em up game that would make all his friends salivate with envy. Unfortunately, the kid soon learned his first lesson on handling disappointment.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) NES is an abysmally poor game. Although Konami is known for developing excellent releases such as Contra and Castlevania, TMNT is an exception to the rule. The game has poorly defined controls, ridiculously repetitive gameplay, and lacks any semblance of good planning. It does have redeeming qualities such as having the full cast of turtles, major allies, and a few key villains, as well as utilizing different camera angles, but these positive traits are far and few between.

TMNT NES is an action-platformer, single player game. The player takes control of only one turtle at a time but can substitute in any of the other three at a whim. It begins with April O'Neil being kidnapped and needing rescue. The player is then given an overhead view of a city with multiple sewer entrances and doors. Upon entering one of them, the camera shifts and the game turns into a regular side-scroller. The problems start here: all four turtles share a similar melee attack.

Raphael and Michelangelo are automatically placed at a disadvantage due to their respective weapons being too short, while Donatello has the most range. This results in players using only Donatello and Leonardo all throughout the game and switching in the other two to act as shields during tough levels. The enemies were also criticized for being too numerous as well as instantly respawning whenever the player backtracks. As a platformer, the jump function is badly tuned, often resulting in the player missing his intended landing spot. With the numerous pits and traps to fall into, one mistake can instantly result in a "Game Over".

TMNT would have been salvageable if not for stage 2, the infamous underwater level. In this early part of the game, players must swim around a narrow, submerged area and disarm eight bombs within 2 minutes and 20 seconds. To make matters worse, electric plants and traps are laid all across the path, and numerous forks make navigating confusing. If the player fails, the game is immediately over. It was extremely difficult to accomplish even on the tenth try and was practically impossible on the first. Many players eventually gave up on the game after numerous failed successions, never even getting to see the later levels.

The TMNT game is one of the highest selling Nintendo games of all time. However, buyers were incredibly disappointed with the quality. There is probably only one reason to play it online, and that is to experience the frustration for yourself.

The ninja turtles are fun, but when you want some real classic gaming action you gotta turn to either the caped crusader (i.e. the batman nes rom) or take your penned-up aggression into the ring for a round of punch out online. You can also play dr mario online or test yourself on the last of the line of Contra titles, contra 7.
