Konami's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: The Manhattan Project is the 1991 beat 'em up sequel to the popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Arcade Game. Its addicting two-player mode coupled with the fact that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' popularity was at its peak at the time was what made this game a huge success. It was well-received and is often considered one of the top NES games of all time.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: The Manhattan Project brilliantly juxtaposes the lighthearted nature of the show with the 8-bit violence that kids enjoy most. The story begins with the Turtles - Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo - taking a well-earned break on a Florida beach. Their vacation is soon interrupted when their nemesis Shredder kidnaps the beautiful April O'Neil and turns the entire Manhattan area into a floating island. As crazy as that sounds, the gameplay gets even crazier as the Turtles battle hordes of Foot Soldiers, Mousers, and all sorts of enemies found in the cartoon. The game also features a badass intro cinematic with the Turtles grabbing their respective weapons while the awesome animation theme song plays in the background in all its 8-bit glory. To top it off, the show's catch phrase "cowabunga" is yelled out as the player starts the game. You know TMNT 3 was going to be good when it already offered plenty of excitement before the game even started.
Unlike the sordid 1989 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles NES game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: The Manhattan Project doesn't mess around and directly offers players what they always wanted in a Ninja Turtles game: a solid two-player beat 'em up with colorful graphics and audio. The Turtles fight their way through various locales such as the sewers, the streets, the beach, an ascending lift, and the Technodrome. At the end of every stage is a popular boss from the cartoon like Rocksteady, Bebop, Krang, Leatherhead and Shredder himself. The Turtles can perform a variety of kicks, flips, and punches, as well as use their weapons in unique attacks. The only drawback is that using the special move each Turtle possesses actually drains the life meter, making them impractical to use except in dire circumstances.
The TMNT games are known for their hodgepodge of good and bad releases. Thankfully, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: The Manhattan Project belongs to the former. It's an excellent beat 'em up that has made buddies and siblings closer together with its lengthy two-player mode and has also led to quite a few squabbles among friends if one wasn't keeping up with the pace. All in all, good memories abound and TMNT 3 can be played online if you want to relive more carefree days.
